ANODIZED ARMED FORCES SERVICE MEDAL. Instituted: 1996 Qualifying Dates: 1995-Present Criteria: Participation in military operations not covered by specific war or the Armed Forces Expeditionary. Awarded for direct support of relief operations involving hurricanes Katrina and Rita (30 consecutive days or 60 non-consecutived days). The area of eligibility encompasses the United States from 27 Aug 2005 through 27 Feb 2006, less the area and time period detailed for receipt of the Humanitarian Service Medal. Those who receive the HSM may also qualify for the AFSM if their direct support does not include the same period and actions used in receiving the HSM.
